On Thursday, AstraZeneca announced that the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Nexium, a generic version of the heartburn drug Nexium. The drug is currently available at a lower price than the generic versions of Nexium. This allows patients to receive a lower per-patient cost and reduces the overall cost of the drug. For Nexium, the price difference is $2.65 per tablet, compared to $1.25 per tablet for Nexium’s generic version.
The FDA has determined that there is no clinically meaningful difference between the generic and Nexium. This means that the generic version of Nexium is no more expensive than the Nexium version.

A few weeks ago, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an alert for the over-the-counter (OTC) version of Prilosec, an effective treatment for certain types of stomach problems. This was the first time that a generic version of the medication has been authorized for sale.
As per a press release from the agency, the drug’s US patent has granted exclusive rights to manufacture and market Prilosec for use in the treatment of peptic ulcer, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), as well as for relieving gastrointestinal symptoms. The Food and Drug Administration is now reviewing the applications and issuing an FDA approval for the generic version of Prilosec.
In addition, the agency is revising the label for the brand-name product to include information about its potential side-effects and warnings related to stomach acid.
The FDA also is reviewing whether the generic version of Prilosec is suitable for the brand-name product and the Food and Drug Administration will issue a review report if the FDA determines that the product is not medically appropriate.
The generic version of Prilosec is currently being marketed as Priloxys, but is available as a single product called Nexium. The product is currently being marketed under the name Priloxys Plus, which is available from a different drugstore under the brand name Priloxys.

LAS VEGAS (CBSMiami) –The FDA has approved the first generic version of AstraZeneca’s drug Nexium to treat heartburn, a common condition in which acidity damages the esophageal lining of the stomach. AstraZeneca, based in the U. S. and a New Jersey company that markets Nexium, is looking at whether Nexium is the best alternative for acidity management in adults.
The company has also started testing a generic version of the drug to treat the symptoms of heartburn. Nexium, which is the branded version, has been available on prescription since its launch in September 2010 and has a low price tag of $1.50 per capsule.
“AstraZeneca is looking at whether generic Nexium is appropriate for adult patients who have a heartburn or other acid reflux symptoms,” says Dr. John H. Engl, a gastroenterologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and co-founder of the American Heart Association.
The drug is expected to be available by September of 2012. The FDA also has approval for a generic version of Nexium to treat the symptoms of heartburn. However, the company hasn’t announced when it will have the generic version.
“We’re trying to get the product in as early as possible so we can make a more informed decision about whether we can continue to provide this medication,” says Dr. Michael C. Rosenblum, a professor of medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and physician and director of the University’s Heart Institute.
“For example, people who are taking certain medications, like blood thinners or antacids, it could be difficult to predict when a patient may have heartburn or other symptoms,” he says. “A patient might have a slight urge to go to bed, or they might be a little bit dizzy.”
AstraZeneca has not made a decision about whether generic Nexium is more appropriate for adult patients. However, it is hoped that the company’s strategy will work.
AstraZeneca’s product is a combination of Nexium and omeprazole, a powerful acid blocker that is designed to prevent stomach acid from forming. A prescription for Nexium would be a lower-cost generic version of the drug.
“The availability of generic Nexium is going to make it accessible to a broader population of people,” says Dr. Andrew L. Shafer, a gastroenterologist at New York University.
AstraZeneca is also looking into an off-label use of omeprazole to treat acid reflux in patients with GERD. The company recently launched a treatment for acid reflux in a trial conducted by the American Heart Association and found it helped about 80 percent of patients in that trial. But the study didn’t find the drug helped those patients.
Dr. Rosenblum, a professor of medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine, says “It’s not just the acid in the stomach, it’s the acid in the esophagus.”
Rosenblum says he has seen some patients using Nexium for acid reflux for the last year. But he’s not sure whether the use of omeprazole is the best way to treat acid reflux. The FDA is considering whether a generic version of omeprazole would be a better option.
“It’s not that the company will not be able to provide a generic omeprazole if there are no alternative options,” Rosenblum says. “It may be possible to develop a generic version of omeprazole, but it’s not clear whether that would be the best way to use omeprazole.”
“What’s your goal,” Dr. H. R. Koeppe, a professor of medicine at Columbia University, says.
“To have a generic omeprazole if there are no other options is a poor move.”
Rosenblum says the company is trying to use an alternative medicine to help those patients. “There are other medications that are available for GERD, such as omeprazole. But the biggest problem is, we don’t know if they will be effective.
